2010 is gearing itself to be a financially questionable year as I’m looking towards graduate school with, when it comes down to it, no means to pay for it. I don’t want to keep relying on student loans. While I’m looking for scholarships, fellowships, research assistance ships, internships, and every other type of -ship, I’m also facing the reality that I may have to pick up some temporary or hourly work to pay for my living and education.

Ideally, if I absolutely had to do it, I’d like to try to do something that could actually run parallel with building up some of my own skills. One idea that I’ve kept in the back of my mind is setting up a shop with Cafe Press by making t-shirt designs and earning a small commission from it, and that in that way it could also help me with earning a little bit of money on the side, too.

And so I actually did it — I opened up a shop, Team Fortress 2 Fan Gear!

I’m going to aim for the next month or so 5 new items a week to post up. And also, it’ll also help build my portfolio, which is in desperate need of some more content. Eventually I’d like to branch out to more general geek and geek girl apparel and goodies, just for right now since Team Fortress 2 design ideas are the first thing that come to mind, I’ll leave the store name with the Team Fortress 2 theme.

But I certainly hope you enjoy what I’ve posted, and will be posting up! I promise they’ll be quality designs that would be actually worth paying the price!

Since the deadline has passed for the Team Fortress 2 Propaganda Contest, here are the propaganda posters that I submitted. Go Team Demo!

The first:

The second, with a slight revision to the borders and colors for a “paper-y” feel:

I heavily doubt I’m going to win or place since I’ve seen some amazing posters floating around the internet and also that I didn’t really submit “more than one” piece since, unfortunately, this week is my week of final exams. But, I am very happy with it!

Right now the scores between Soldiers KIA and Demomen KIA are 4,923,531 and 5,056,134 — a near 100,000 difference. Hopefully, when the war is concluded tomorrow the Demomen make a come back, and I certainly hope that my artwork adds points to the Demoman side!

Amidst it being the week of finals at school, there is a war going on — a war between Team Fortress 2’s Demoman and Solider.

The Demoman is currently losing, and even though I’ve contributed some Soldier heads to the war, drastic measures had to be taken. Propaganda artwork could count for extra points from Gabe Newell himself! And, since I’m totally and completely PRO-DEMO, I took the time to submit my entry to Team Fortress 2’s Propaganda Contest.

I actually ended up submitting two, with the later one being a revision. In my haste, I didn’t end up liking certain elements of my first and I had spotted very small blotch with my vector art.

I do like how my entry turned out, but I don’t want to post it online until after this contest is over until December 15th. In the meantime, you can assume that I submitted the following as my propaganda poster:

Go Black Scottish Cyclops Army!

… omgomg finals omgomg

The new release of Google SketchUp 7.1 came out recently!

I decided to play with it a little bit yesterday for fun and out of curiosity. My impressions after using it is that it’s a pretty easy software to pick up and use for anyone from a beginner to an experienced 3D modeler. I believe it’s mostly due to the fact things are much more simplified compared to Blender and even CATIA. For example, SketchUp’s Push/Pull tool is an extrusion, tapering, bevel, cutout tool all-in-one.

My first attempt to model with it was a hole puncher since it was something lying around my desk and thought it wouldn’t be easy to model, yet not too hard. (But yes, I’ll agree with you that it wasn’t the most exciting model to make.)

Personally, I think I made the model in a pretty sloppy manner, but I was learning. I have yet to go through the documentation and tutorials to get a full understanding of how to use it. Also, in this month’s issue of ImagineFX there’s a feature on artist Alex Jenyon’s use of Google Sketchup in 2D digital painting compositions.

I’m certainly going to have to give it a try.

The past two weeks I’ve been busy at work with shifts lasting 10 or more hours. So, it’s been hard for me to continue on with my art and music projects because coming home to be only in front of a computer more is just too much. But now with things have been easing down, I’m slowly getting back on track, first and foremost with the Meet the PANDAs series.

The PANDA painting I’m working on right now is PANDA | Jarhead as the Heavy. I’ll be updating this daily to show my progress, and at the moment I’m guessing that this will take me until next week. But, by detailing it this way you can all see how I go along at different stages of these drawings, and “documenting” can help me see where I can make improvements later.

Progress Shots

Preliminary Arm Shading. 10/15/08

I started shading the arm a bit so I could get an idea of how the light hits it.How I’d like the lighting to come from is to from behind the left of Jarhead’s face and from above. It is by all means not the final product, but it’s to get me started.

I have a lo-ve-ly bunch of .. uh .. bu-bu-lets. 10/15/08

Well, they’re not quite as “lovely” as I hoped, but this will suffice for now. These bullets will have to go through a bit more cleaning and detailing done later.

16 – A (crappy) guideline for bullets. 10/14/08

I didn’t get as very far today with the picture since I was working on a bit of music, but I tried to start giving myself more concrete guides on what to do with the remaining bullets. As I mentioned earlier, I’m having a lot of trouble with the bullets in making them 3D, and now making them actually flow along a curve. I drew a very, rough pink curve on both ends to help me establish my guides. There’s a portion in the bullet strap that I want to look “scrunched up” to give more depth, hence the transition to smaller bullets where I last left off, but it’s becoming more cumbersome than it’s probably worth.

I just can’t wait to get the bullets done..

15 – The shaded bullet set. 10/13/08

Well, it was much easier to shade this time around. I like how they ended up looking a bit more 3D than the first three bullets I made. There’s a lot of cleaning up to do with it, but I’ll do most of the clean up work once I get the rest of the bullets done and make them blend a bit more with the vest.

14 – Another take on bullets. 10/13/08

One thing that had been giving me problems with doing the top three was the inconsistencies I had with each of them in terms of perspective and shading. So instead of working on each bullet individually I decided to try another approach by looking at the bigger picture and working on a set at a time. First, of course, is painting the base but it was hard to first visualize the 3D bullets into 2D, as well as bullet tilting on different planes. Though, I would say that looking at a set of bullets helped.

I’m not too happy with the end result of my base painting, but I decided to move on. I also changed the color of the vest to a more gray-ish tone.

13 – “I’ve yet to see someone who can outsmart bullet.” 10/12/08

If there’s anything that I wasn’t looking forward to in this picture, it would be working on the bullets. It was something that I foresaw would take me the longest time, considering that in shading the large cannisters drapped on the shoulders in Meet PANDA | Pyrrhus took me about 45-60 min for one. Granted, I know that it takes me a long time because I’m still learning, but it’s still a pain in the butt and is a bit monotonous as compared to drawing/shading a face.

The picture that I’m referencing for the bullets is the picture of the Heavy holding Natascha. What threw me off with the bullets is the small detail with each of them (the “wrapper” around it), which was something I hadn’t taken notice before until now. Also, I’m having a bit of trouble with shading the bullets properly due to their shape. Hopefully this is something I can fix as I continue working at it because it isn’t as intuitive as I initially thought it would be.

12 – See My Vest. 10/12/08

I continued where I left off from the collar by adding the trim to the vest and adjusting the color slightly using a combination of Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast. I’m still not sure what color the vest and pants truly are in the game since, depending on which screenshots you look at, it can be either gray or brown in hue. I’m starting to lean towards the idea that they’re gray, and that the brown colors come from reflections in the game environment, so that’s what I have going on with Jarhead’s vest right now — a combination of gray and brown. As the picture starts getting closer to completion, I’d like to add more to the environment this time, compared to Meet PANDA | Pyrrhus. Maybe the blue aura around him from a Medigun? We’ll see.

No drawing only petting. 10/8/08

This isn’t really an update to Jared’s picture, but I came home to Mochi flopping on the floor, and as I walked towards my room she zoomed right past me and immediately laid right down on top of the tablet. I’m assuming she knew what I was going to do right when I came home.

10/8/08, 10:22pm: Incidentally, I hurt a joint in my hand today. I hope it heals tomorrow.

11 – Collar. 10/7/2008

It’s been a while since I last updated, but then again I’ve had a pretty eventful weekend. Now that things are slowing down again I can get back to this picture. I’m starting with Jarhead’s head down, so I started on the collar. I worked a bit on the blending and lighting, and will have to start cleaning it up with some detailing later.

Oh, and I’ll also have to get my layers under control. It’s getting a bit disorganized now.

10 – Sean’s Layer. 10/3/08

Sean wanted to try out the tablet! Jarhead doesn’t have a parrot on his shoulder, though — he has a Tux. :)

09 – Color Me Jarhead. 10/3/08

I colored the rest of the body with a dark color so that I can start shading it. I had to constantly refer to the Heavy Update site, and even up to now I’m still not quite sure what color the Heavy’s pants are. They look gray, but on my TF2 wallpaper they look black, and in some in-game screenshots they look brown. Also, I had to fix some shaping with the gun. It’s a bit hard to tell on the above screenshot, but there are some differences from the sketch. I’m also getting to the point where I’m thinking about a background, and I’m thinking that perhaps an “action screenshot” would be good, whether it be from the game itself or from the TF2 Meet The videos.

Well, it looks like I’m going to have to play some TF2 to figure out the (perceived?) issue with the pants, spectate to get some good screenshots, and snipe a few heads. “Thanks fer standin’ still, wanker!”

10/2/08

No update today. I’m pretty exhausted due to work and from my travel to Kansas City. I’ll continue tomorrow though.

08 – Color Manipulation II. 10/1/08

After manipulating the color settings, brightness/contrast, and levels, I finally came across a more natural skin color. I added a bit more details here and there, and I think the head is done. You can kind of see the slight differences between the sketch and the painting when the sketch is toggled on/off. The shadows in the chin area are a bit blue-ish as a result of playing with the colors, but I’ll fix that later when I start the body tomorrow.

07 – An earnest Van-Dyke. 10/1/08

Something seemed a miss when I looked at the picture, until I realized that I was missing the Van Dyke. Instead of messing around like I did last time, I added an earnest Van Dyke to Jarhead’s chin. It’s much fuller than it is on the reference picture that I’m using for him. (And the reference picture I have is a bit misleading too, since I guess Jarhead shaved a few days before I took it.)

06 – Color Manipulation I. 10/1/08

The plan for today was to 1) add a full head of hair on Jarhead and 2) fix the coloring. I planned on fixing the coloring by fiddling around with the hue/saturation features, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so hard as well as time consuming. I started doubting whether or not starting with dark colors was the right thing for me to do.

05 – Some Detailing. 9/30/08

Continued on with detailing. I fixed some proportions that I had with the cheek as well as the mouth. But this is as far as I’ll go tonight. The chin is a bit sloppy with the highlighting, but it’ll be covered later anyway with scruff.

And on an unrelated note (sort of), if you’re curious about my work area (read: makeshift art “studio”) you can check it out here.

04 – Eyes & Mouth. 9/30/08

I started working on the eyes and the mouth today. I’m at the point now where I can “let go” of the sketch layer so I can focus on shading/highlighting/blending. The picture above is a comparison with the sketch layer on and with it off. At the moment, Jarhead looks quite tan, but I think it’s best to start out dark especially with not having a background in mind yet. When I get to the point of having a background done, adjusting the colors later will be easy. I also changed my skin color swatch.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtz-3M0iyQE]

03 – Optional Van-Dyke layer. 9/29/08

It came to my attention that I’m not sure whether or not Jarhead has a Van-Dyke or not. From the reference picture I have of him, I can’t quite tell. For now, I have a layer which I can toggle on/off for now.

02 – Preliminary Base Painting. 9/29/08

I changed the sketch layers to an opacity of 40% and created a layer, “Base”. A quick Google image search on “skin palette” saved me what took me hours to figure out when making PANDA | Pyrrhus. The skin pallete I found, and am tentatively using, can be found here. At the moment, I’m kind of playing around with colors and seeing what I like in terms of lighting.

01 – Sketch. 9/29/08

I start out with a rough sketch. I’m usually off by a bit here and there with my sketches, but somehow the proportions fix themselves as I go along. Though, the thought bubble and the sandvich won’t be on the final version. In actuality, Jarhead doesn’t like the sandvich very much…

When I look up online on tips of for artists, the one thing that I constantly run upon is having a good foundation on drawing human anatomy. And, I guess, this makes a lot of sense since most drawings contain the human figure in some way shape or form.

Legendary Disney animator, Milt Kahl, was quoted:

“The ability to draw and be able to turn things and the ability, the knowledge that enables you to caricature and exaggerate in the right direction and emphasise the difference between things is what you’re doing all the time. Any time you’re doing a strong drawing of anything well, your drawing is strong because you’re depicting why this is different from something else. You need that figure-drawing background in order to sharpen. Every animator should have this background and unfortunately, they don’t.”

That being said, one thing that I’m going to start doing is trying to do draftsmanship and drawing the human figure. Hopefully over time, doing this as a practice could help strengthen my artwork in the long run.

First off, the female form.

I have a book that I got a while back called Anatomy for Fantasy Artists. In it, it has some various poses of both a man and a woman posing, as well as showing how light falls across the human body in different angles. For now, I’ve chosen to quickly draw two female poses from the book:

A couple things I learned doing this are:

The female body is very curvy in nature (if that wasn’t obvious already)

I need to learn that the waist is much smaller than I think it is

Drawing a curve through the center of the torso helps me in directioning the chest to the abdomen

I need to pay more attention in curving out the chest or else the wider it becomes, the more “man-like” it becomes

I need to practice drawing legs more, and I seem to have trouble with the calves.

I have a habit of making every part of a female figure slim, and that I should not get caught in it or else it starts become more … alien-like

“V”-ing out the hips seems to help more with transitioning to the thigh

I need to remember that shoulders need to be parallel to the hip.

I know that the poses are a bit off, but that’s okay — practice makes perfect.

Well, it took me about 2-3 weeks of trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my header image on my website. I knew that I wanted to draw a self-portrait of myself in there, but I had no idea on how to incorporate it in, nor did I figure out what style I wanted to use.

I drew myself several times, though me being pretty critical about how I draw myself, I scrapped almost all of them. I then decided to deviate into more of a Disney-type look. Of all the characters I referenced myself as Mulan/Pocahontas, mostly because of me being Asian/Pacific Islander-ish. I also got the chance to incorporate my new haircut, too.

Sketch (done during lunch at work >_>):

After more refining when I got home with Photoshop and my tablet:

So, I finally incorporated that into my header image, as you can see above. (I need to think of a better tagline, though.) Though, there’s still a number of files and pictures I need to take for my portfolio, which I haven’t done lately either. Also, there is making the banner for Sean’s website, Objive, and helping Jordan out with the graphics for his new release of songs edits for ITG called “Groove n’ Move”.

Lots of stuff to do!

The only thing that wasn’t digitally painted is the background. I went into the game and screenshot-ed a view of cp_badlands overlooking the control point. I guess that’s the cool thing about doing TF2 fan art — I can get away with screenshot-ing the game for backgrounds. :)

The following are screenshots of the progression of this art. I didn’t take a time lapse video of this since I already knew off the bat that this would take me more than a day. Maybe later on I can do a time lapse video of my “time attack” sketches.

Over the past weekend I’ve purchased myself a tablet, which was one of the things I’ve been eyeing for a while on top of keyboard. So, for the past couple of days I’ve been playing with it and slowly getting more accustomed to its features. Lately I seem to be in a TF2 fan art-sort-of-mode. What I wanted to do was end up making a couple of drawings of the TF2 characters but making them more realistic face-wise while still keeping cartoon structures for the body. But as I was perusing the web looking for reference models (i.e., Stephen Colbert to reference as the Medic) I came across the idea of instead making art of our PANDA’s group with people being the characters that they enjoy the most.

So of course, I had to start out with Sean being the Demoman.

Most of my graphics work the past few years has been more so typography and page layout work, and not so much drawings/paintings/illustration. (I mean, I’ve done them before, but with a mouse, and for the most part they’ve come out pretty crappy.) So I made sure I had a window open to those online videos of 5 min sketches of Spiderman and Jack Sparrow and kind of fumbled about from there. A number of times I found myself having to “fix Sean” especially in moments of, “Oh God! Oh God! He’s starting to look like Chuck Norris! Oh crap! Must fix! Ahhhhhh!”

It amazes me how the artist of the 5 minute sketches completed those works in a time span of 5 hours or less. So far, I think I’ve already spent about 8 to get to where I’m at at the moment. I decided early on that I would just take screenshots of my work along the way instead of screen recording/FRAPS-ing something that would probably be the length of 12 hours or so.

Sean as Demoman is a test at the moment on whether or not I can actually pull this sort of art off. And if it all turns out well, maybe I can start drawing more PANDA’s.
